League of Michigan Bicyclists

  ·

The League of Michigan Bicyclists is partnering with Quiet Water Society to bring fantastic bicycling topics, exhibitors, and prizes to this year’s Quiet Adventures Symposium (QAS) on March 4th. Prepare for the 2023 riding season, meet some of the movers and shakers in the Michigan bicycling community, and connect with our peers in the paddling and hiking world. Today is the final day to purchase advance tickets (link in comments)!

In addition to those we highlighted yesterday, featured speakers include:

*** Robert Bunnell – Nothing to Something: How Gravel Has Made Cycling Accessible (4:00-5:00 p.m.)

Gravel cycling has opened up the sport of cycling to thousands of new participants in the state of Michigan, where communities that once would never see cycling are now enclaves for dedicated riders. Learn how this new and exciting format of cycling has started as well as its impact on small communities and the cycling industry within the state-at-large.

Robert will also discuss his own experiences w/ serving as a leadership position in multiple cycling groups, volunteerism, and how the community fosters growth.

Now residing in lower Genesee County, Robert has co-founded a county-wide grass-roots cycling organization (Livingston County Gravel Riders) as well as co-founded a formal gravel and mountain bike cycling team centered in the greater Flint region (Team Consolidated.)

*** Neal Glazebrook – LMB Events Past, Present, and Future (3:00-3:45 p.m.)

Events Director Neal Glazebrook will present a history and road map of where LMB events have been and where they are heading. Road touring has been the mainstay of offerings for nearly 40 years but recent shifts in the organization have opened up new opportunities for the LMB to broaden the event line up and share not only with Michiganders but folks from around the globe how great of a cycling state Michigan is.

Neal is an avid amateur cyclist who competes in ultra distance Gravel and Mountain bike races here in Michigan. He rides both for sport and for pleasure. Neal is a founding board member of Go Liv Co – Horal Family Foundation, former Chair of the Livingston County Transportation Coalition, course designer for the Tour de Livingston, Chair of the Oceola Township Planning Commission, a Howell Rotarian, founding member of the Livingston County Gravel Riders and currently sits on the MDNR NAW Board (Non-motorized Advisory Workgroup). He is also a member of MCMBA, POTO, and CRAMBA Mountain bike chapters.

*** E-Powered Recreation: Yes, No… Maybe? Panel Discussion (4:00-5:00 p.m.)

Should Class 1 e-bikes be allowed on Michigan’s state-owned natural surface trails? How about Class 2? Under what circumstances? What about “unclassified electric vehicles” – souped-up contraptions that don’t meet the legal definition of an e-bike? With representatives from MTGA, DNR, and others, the panel will look at these questions, pros and cons, best practices in other states, and possible ways forward for Michigan mountain biking.
