Bicycling in Livingston County

We shouldn’t have to risk our lives to ride our bikes

At GLC-HFF, cycling is close to our hearts. Most of our volunteers and board members ride their bikes regularly. Some even race them! Every one of them will tell you that cycling in Livingston County is better than it used to be, but it still has a long way to go. Riding in Livingston usually involves getting in your car and driving to your destination to ride your bike because the streets in between are too hazardous to ride. This is a symptom of a community that historically hasn’t made connection a priority. It’s also one of the main challenges that we were created to meet. For ourselves and for the future, we need to make cycling safer and connect our communities.

Here in Livingston County, we’ve been blessed with natural gems in our own community. Kensington Metropark, Huron Meadows, Brighton Rec Area, Island Lake Rec Area. We even have some lovely trails in between that come very close to connecting those urban oases, but the parts that aren’t connected are dangerous and stop many cyclists from fully enjoying what the Livingston area has to offer. We shouldn’t have to risk our lives to ride our bikes and we should be able to ride them from our front doors.
